Because of all the Bowfishing I do, I like to chum the water to keep bigger and better "game fish" coming by my watering hole. Many times, when I catch or shoot catfish I will chop them up and make my own chum out of them. This time, I actually chummed for them instead of with them.
I was at Walmart a few weeks back and saw this bag of Magic Bait Dinner Bell Fish Chum for about $8. The bag claims it will attract Catfish, Baitfish & Panfish.
The instructions outline 2 ways to use the chum:
1 - Make 6 golf ball sized clumps of the chum and drop it into the water. The balls will then sink and slowly dissolve.
2 - Pour 1 or more bags of chum into a bait bucket then weight the bucket and drop it in. The chum will slowly leak out of the holes in the bait buck.
I didn't do either - I cut the top of the bag and dumped it into the water by my dock... Immediately 90% of the "wet powder" sank to the bottom while the remainder floated on the surface...
...and it worked... Within a few minutes I had a swarm of Catfish and Mangrove Snapper.
To my surprise, this lasted for hours. Even as most of the chum had dissolved away, I had curious fish meandering through the area trying to find that smell...
SUMMARY: For $8 this is a pretty good bag of chum. I don't like the idea of having to hand mold clumps to drop in, but even without following the correct method, it worked and it worked well!
